Who would have thought that in my 60 's , I would be starting a blog. There is a first for everything.
Essentially this blog is dedicated to the project of a school for disadvantaged children in the Tema New Town area of Ghana who without such support, would not attend school. We are grateful to the charity TEABAG (The education and book appeal Ghana) for their support and encouragement and the Maria Tsakos Fundacion as well as the myriad of fans, supporters and all those who have helped reach this stage .
Tema Newtown is a suburb of the port of Tema Ghana located by the sea, consisting of small industries, shanty type huts and generally is impoverished. A school has been opened in the grounds of the St Nicholas Orthodox Church which will cater for 25 children between the ages of 4 and 6. As the children will develop, so the next class will open and in this way children will complete their elementary education. We have ambitious hopes that by the time our initial class will graduate, we will have completed a secondary school on land kindly donated by the Tsakos Fundacion. We are also hoping to build a vocational college which would enable these first children to actually learn a skill. However baby steps first.
At the same time we are helping Winners Basic School by improving their building and by donating much needed academic material.
With great excitement the school was opened on 1st February 2012 and class began.
Two friends Mrs Vivienne King a dynamic individual who has successfully run her own business, sold it, retired and then started another company and Mrs Elizabeth Dutton a consultant, academic who has led a very exciting life all over the world are arriving on February 17th and will assist in the Teaching at both schools for a period of time. They will also see how best we can improve conditions, raise funds and reach our goal and I hope they will be associated for a long time to come.
We have already become involved in the health of some of the chidren and it is very rewarding to see children flourish by giving them something nourishing to eat and having their health problems dealt with.
I hope you will enjoy our journey and become involved in either a material way, or just by giving us your support and blessing.
I am so happy you started this blog to help know what is going on at Winner's and St.Nicholas Schools.Very well written and interesting to read.
